What People are Saying...

We received quite a few responses to August's Column "Ban the Burqa." If you've lost track of what was written, check out the August issue of The Uptight Suburbanite at www.theuptightsuburbanite.com. The commentary was written by Allen Herman.

Hi Allen,
I look forward to reading your magazine every month. Love the silly little calendar, too. Your editorials really tell it like it is! Please publish some info on the Tea Party.... sounds like we both should join.

Allen,
I read each issue of The Uptight Suburbanite and I must comment on an article in the July issue. I read "Parking Lot Wars, etc.," and have to agree with the article regarding Verizon Fios. Unfortunately, we selected Fios and have had nothing but aggravation.................

I agree, their customer service is quite unacceptable. As soon as our contract expires in January, Fios is out the door. Verizon shouldn't have put Fios on the market if they couldn't do the job properly.

Our TV upstairs is not HD and it is not working. Why, I don't know. I've been putting off calling for service as I don't think I could tolerate being placed on hold to repair the problem myself. BRING ON JANUARY!
Thanks for a good article. I know I'm nuts and it's great to realize others have had problems. Keep up the good work.

Allen -
My thoughts in many ways do not disagree with you but some points need more clarification. The move in France to ban Burqas was based on the fact that a very large Muslim population was becoming increasingly unruly and resorting to demonstrations that often became violent. The ban was to "unmask" those who would hide behind the Burqa for violent actions. Under those circumstances, it appears justifiable. It was also documented that men used the Burqas to hide behind while commiting terrorist acts within Paris.

Much fewer women in the USA wear Burqas and increasingly, the Afro-American male population use the "hoodie" to hide within. The impression they leave is one of secrecy, potential violence and intimidation. Tell me why people wear "hoodies" in August when the heat is so ridiculous? That's taking the phrase "a slave to fashion" a bit too far. Stereotyping? Profiling? Maybe so, but we are afraid to say what is on our minds and sometimes, profiling can't be avoided nor should it be. The line is vague and to cross it exposes us to discrimination, harassment and embarassment.

The problem for the USA is that religious freedoms amd freedom of speech are protected under the Constitution and make the issue a legally difficult one to control. If our safety is compromised and further exposure to potential terrorists becomes more pronounced, then the time has come to take some action to safeguard the majority of people, including those Muslim families who are following their religious freedom and abide by the rule of law in the USA.

Mr. Herman,
This article is the best I have read in quite awhile. I actually agree with all you wrote. One comparison that you could also make about tolerance is that we would accept the mosque at Ground Zero when Muslims accept a church in Mecca.

Dear Allen,
Thank you for speaking up about a real disturbing issue. You are so right about where are the liberals such as ACLU, Hollywood and all the other groups that like to make themselves known. This custom is truly slavery and should be outlawed by every nation. Other things that should be considered is how can someone wearing a Burqa be a bank teller, police officer, nurse, actress, etc.?.......

What gives a man the right to prevent another person from looking at his wife or daughter? I hope we can make everyone look at each other with equality and dignity.

Please Write an Article About This!
I am so disgusted with our immigration system. I am married to a women from Great Britain and her sister would like to immigrate to our country. 14 years ago when my wife came here the wait was 3 years, which is still a long time but liveable. We filled out the I-130 form and sent it in and then, when I checked on the status they have nerve to say the USCIS national goal for processing this form should be 5 months. In reality the national average is 52 months and if you have to deal with the California office, which is where most people have to deal with, including us, the wait is 111.3 months or just under 10 years! I have the printout to show you.

I have written to Congress to no avail, and the President and his advisors, and all that has been accomplished is the print out, which I kept, that has changed the statistics to look much better than they are. That is pathetic to say it should take 5 months and in reality 10 years in this day and age where I am sure our government could tell me my entire life's story in 24 hours or less.

My relatives were just in for two weeks and when I checked the status they said it will be another 8 years till they start doing anything with their case. I now have sympathy for all illegal immigrants since coming here is almost impossible legally. Look what the land of the free has turned into? I have tried big news agencies but they only want to tell the public about all the illegal immigrants who want to be made citizens, but not the whole story why they come here the way they do.

I used to be naive like everyone else and now I tell everyone how messed up our government is. Please help us. I want some news agency to let the people know just what a disgrace our system has become. I would appreciate any help with this matter as I have exhausted myself fighting this bureaucracy.
Thank You,

Allen,
Well written and to the point.

Our country grew (and prospered) through immigration and I have no quarrel with that. However, we are a nation of laws and those coming here legally should either live under the prevailing customs and laws or go back from whence they came. The same thing applies to the use of the English language, learn it and use it.
Thank you for an excellent article.

Loved your latest column. Congrats on your 6th Anniversary.
You mentioned the Carrier Pigeon logo which brings back memories for me of some 40 or so years ago when my son worked as a Carrier Pigeon delivery boy after school. Life does have its twists and turns and you have learned to follow those bends probably a lot easier than I have.

We have put our Richboro home up for sale and will move to North Myrtle Beach. I will miss The Uptight Suburbanite, mostly missing your essays. Be assured, however, that I will be logging onto your website faithfully each month to read your monthly essay.
May you and Linda and all your family be inscribed for a Sweet New Year.
God Bless,
Charlotte Ginsburg Schmidt
